Flying high (for a while)

Jo Strømgren has directed two operas: “Orfeus & Eyridike” with the Norwegian National Opera and “The Fairy Queen” with Staatstheater Mainz. Apart from this he has also choreographed “The Bat” with Royal Danish Opera under the direction of Peter Langdal. The latter has also been restaged with Opera National de Lyon and televised by the national Danish TV.

In respect for the art form itself, it is wise to avoid too many big words after just two engagements. But from a beginner’s humble position, it is certainly okay to say that making opera is as close to euphoria Jo Strømgren has ever gotten. With a good understanding of music, discipline at rehearsals, a nose for conflicts (before they happen), and a clear vision – opera can be a walk in the park. Simply because the competence around you is so high. If you lack this list of capacities, though, opera can probably be a ruthless war zone.
